A-to-Z Challenge: Garden

Deviant Art: Darkosikman – Rain in Garden

I Love the Rain…

… because it nourishes my garden during a scorching summer day here in Texas. Hm, maybe it would be a different story if I live near a city where acid rain takes place: mutant flowers and creating a dangerous place to dance in. I have so many things I want to do and envision so many garden projects in my mind: trellises, canopies, pathways. My siblings and I have inherited our parents’ green thumb. Growing up, we had fun experimenting with growing with a bunch of things: grape trees, corn, lima beans, mango trees as our parents poured their efforts in growing squash, lettuce, peppers, mint, cucumbers, bitter melons, pear, persimmon, apple trees.

Right now, my boyfriend’s family has gifted me with a garden plot, and I’m learning how to work with the soil in this area. I leveled the garden by raking the ground and adding layers of topsoil. It’s fairly sandy and the climate can be very hot during the summer in this region. Gladiolus, dahlias, sunflowers, hibiscus, and bluebonnet flowers shot up into the air pretty well with no problem. Lettuce grew well during the winter. Squash and pumpkin vines climbed onto the fence well! I had trouble growing tomatoes and herbs.

Rain in Pop Culture

I also love rain soaked scenes in movies which seems to heighten the drama and emotions experienced.

Prince’s song, Purple Rain, inspired a Rain Room in a museum in Los Angeles, CA.

Los Angeles Times – In a tribute to Prince, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art decided that the water in the popular Rain Room installation would be turned purple. (Barbara Davidson / Los Angeles Times)

One of my favourite facts about rain is that when it rains on Neptune, it rains diamonds.

Sorry – you won’t find any! It’s more of a theory than a fact and if it happens it is so far beneath the layers of planet we can ever see into we will never be able to get a working camera to last long enough to take a pic! 😦

😦 And I was envisioning a rain of diamonds! Fun to imagine the theory coming to life! 🙂

Thinking about it… it is possible to have diamonds rain down upon us here on Earth!

Diamonds are simply pure carbon atoms collected into a small space and then put under tremendous pressure (which also heats them in the process). This is most commonly done deep in the Earth’s crust, but could also be done in the liquid mantle (magma). When a volcano erupts the magma could contain individual diamonds or it could ‘scoop’ up diamonds from the crust as it shoots up through the volcano spout. Thes may then ‘rain’ down onto the ground below.

Being uncut diamonds they would not be very sparkly though! 😦

Good point! I forgot about the original look of diamonds. For some reason I was thinking of Rhianna’s song, “Diamonds”. Not that it would be pleasant to feel that…Like a hailstorm really. 🙂

Wow! Marilyn over at Serendipity said hers would last only for 10 years or so. I didn’t realize nuclear power can be used for public use now. 🙂

Well… maybe not right now – but the concept is sound and some people might have (Synthetic, Carbon-14) diamonds for heart pump regulators soon?? 🙂

They could be a tad expensive though – what do you think??

That would be a wonderful idea, though I’m not too sure how to install one of those or where I would look for information. Definitely useful for our hot summers!

That’s why i thought it might be a good idea – they are very economical and popular here. Ask at any good gardening centre. Installation is easy but you need a handy water tap or rainwater storage tank.

You bury the hosepipe (special purpose one) in a shallow trench, about half a spade depth is ok. and either have it on a timer or turn it on when you visit and turn off when you leave. regular visits recommended! 🙂
