Sarah Josepha Hale is widely known for her nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, and she published a collection of poems called, “The Genius of Oblivion” . She campaigned for the American holiday of Thanksgiving by writing letters to five U.S. presidents. Abe Lincoln was the one convinced enough to support legislation to make it a national holiday. She also had correspondence with Matthew Vassar to offer educational opportunities to women. Her first novel, Northwood, was an anti-slavery work that established her literary reputation.
