#Contrapunctual Poem – What Do You Want?

Confidence… thrives on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection and on unselfish performance. Without them it cannot live.” – Franklin Delano Roosevelt

  • Reflection: I first learned about contrapunctual music when I had to memorize Bach’s Invention No.8 for a piano lesson. I was enchanted by the concept of taking two separate independent melodies and combining them into one song. It was very fun to practice. So when I learned that there is contrapunctual poetry, I wanted to take a stab at it!My boyfriend frequently asks me, “A penny for your thoughts?” when he realizes I haven’t spoken up yet whether he’s chatting about some new, bizarre animated series I haven’t seen yet or a cool invention Elon Musk created. I quietly listen taking in account of everything that’s being said, and sometimes I forget to share my thoughts on the matter. There are days when I think he can read my mind, but alas, that is not the case!

I’ll be honest… it’s rough for me to be honest at times! I get worried about hurting feelings and how it might affect someone especially if they are sensitive. However, I find that when I do, I may feel uncomfortable at first, but I later feel better for airing out how I truly feel. Those close to me will appreciate and respect my thoughts even if it initially stings a bit. Makes me wonder how “the truth will set you free” even if it’s painful. The truth can be a hard pill to swallow sometimes and it can be overwhelming.

I think Lincoln’s honesty played a significant part in “binding up the nation’s wounds” even though the public didn’t always like what he had to say at times. The things he said and did radically shifted the tide for future generations. So, in response to Jack Nicholson’s famous line, “You can’t handle the truth!”, Lincoln did say that “Truth is generally the best vindication against slander.” in a letter to the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton July 18, 1864 and “If [people] were given the truth, they can be depended on to meet any national crisis”

    Touché Abe!

  1. Honesty can indeed be a difficult pill to swallow. I’ve often struggled with both sides of the coin, so to speak. I’ve been learning that my sensitivity and natural empathetic personality are actually strengths that help put me in the other persons place, whether it’s beings the one faced with speaking up about a problem or I’m on the record end. It helps me understand the complexities of the whole thing and I’m learning it’s a wonderful opportunity for growth. So at least if I’m the one speaking up I can try to present my words in a gentle and caring way that I would want someone to speak to me. Likewise, I’m learning to not become defensive end take things so personally and so much to heart, but instead I’ve been working on allowing these things to expand my perspective of the world around me. Granted that’s not to say I won’t cry, as my heart is truly tender, but I will definitely take it less personally after a good cry to release the tension.😉

    • Oh yes! Empathy is a very powerful quality! I think if we integrate it within our lives, so much can change for the better! I think it helps develop deep relationships and helps people feel as if they are listened to and understood. It makes people feel less lonely. It must be interesting for you when you have one opinion, but your empathy allows you to understand where the other is coming from. As always, thank you for sharing your thoughtful input on this important matter! I think it also helps me communicate my own thoughts to those near me and any others who may be reading. ❤ 🙂

    • Thank you Richa! It’s something people have told me, “A penny for your thoughts”. That’s what my loved ones wanted because I am so quiet! It was a different approach than how I thought the poem was going to be., but very meaningful. ❤ 🙂

    • Thanks! I can’t imagine what Abe would say now with everything in politics today. But, yes, there are certain situations where honesty might not be what is called for. For some reason I’m thinking of the movie “Liar, Liar”. 😀

      • 🙂 Not to sy that we should ever be dishonest of course, just that human social contact up to now has not ever been able to operate all that well with full and total honesty…. not that all that many ever try it of course… even with themself! 😉
        Enjoy your day Sa. 🙂

  2. Thanks for this article. I might also like to mention that it can end up being hard if you find yourself in school and simply starting out to initiate a long credit standing. There are many scholars who are simply trying to make it and have a protracted or favourable credit history is often a difficult thing to have.

Hey would you mind letting me know which hosting company you’re
utilizing? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different internet browsers and I must say this blog loads
a lot quicker then most. Can you suggest a good internet hosting provider at a
reasonable price? Cheers, I appreciate it! I have been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like
yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will be much more useful than ever before.

    • Thank you Amy for this wonderful compliment! I was just using WordPress for free at the time that I wrote this. They also have a premium version at a fee if you want more features to promote your business or any other content you want to share. 🙂

  7. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images. Maybe you could space it out better?
